The famous Amer road with Jal Mahal on one side leads you all the way to the Aravali hills. These are the hills where the Amer Fort exists. Amer Fort sometimes called Amber fort is located just 11 km far from the heart of Jaipur. The Amer is a city fortified by walls and it is visible existing on the hill slopes around Amer Fort. The Amer Fort was surrounded by the habitation of Meena people an indigenous tribe.

Amber Fort remains opens at 08:00 am every day and closes by 17:30 Hrs. Earlier this fort used to remain closed on national festival Holi but presently ASI has decided to open it even on Holi keeping in mind the convenience of the tourists.

How to reach Amer Fort?

The fort is situated on a high elevation, there are three ways to approach the fort. You can ride an elephant in the morning which costs 1100 INR for two people, this is an amazing experience as you ride all the way saddled on top of an elephant. Second, you can take a smaller route ascending the old steps right up to the Amer Fort. Third, you can ride a Jeep vehicle which will take you up to the Amer Fort.

What are the places to visit in the Amer fort?

Jaleb Chowk-

This is a large courtyard inside the Amer fort having two entrance gates. The elephants and the steps lead you inside through the Suraj Pol or the Sun gate, right opposite is the lunar gate, if you are riding jeep you will enter the courtyard through lunar gate. This huge courtyard was the parade and congregation ground. The royal army used to parade over here in those times.

What is the History of Shila Devi ?

The gate leading to the Deewan E aam is called the Singh Pol meaning the Lion Gate. Hindu Temple of Goddess Kali is situated on the right side of Singh Pol. The effigy of the Goddess is said to be brought by King Man Singh I from Bengal as he won over the King of Jeesore in 1604. The Goddess is also called as Shila Devi and is known to be the presiding goddess of the Chaitanya cult. Passing through the Singh Pol you can note the old wooden gate and the lock which is still in working condition.

Deewan E Aam-

This is a pavilion having large open space and a building comprising of 27 colonnades and 48 pillars. This building is known as Dewan E aam and was a court for the common people. The King used to preside over a congregation of common people.

How Amer Fort resembles Agra Fort?

The style of architecture is very similar to the architecture of Agra Fort as the Kachwaha rulers were subordinates of the Mughal Emperors. The pillars have elephant-shaped arches on top known to be a classic example of the Hindu style of architecture. Red sandstone was mined from the mines of Karauli while the white marble was mined from makrana, these are the same mines from where marble used in the construction of Tajmahal was mined.

Ganesh Pol–

A multi-storied gate elegantly decorated with multi-colored frescoes and mosaics is known as the Ganesh pol this connects Deewan E AAM with Deewan E Khas. The top floor of the gate has huge lattice screens the queens were supposed to have a watch over the proceedings of Dewan E aam from here without being noticed. Ganesh is the name of the elephant Hindu God , a picture of the same at the entrance is known to bring good luck to the household.

Why Dewaan E Khaas is known as Sheesh Mahal ?

Dewaan E khaas or the house of Public audience is also known by the name of “Sheesh mahal”. The walls  have a mosaic of glass embedded in the stucco, the walls bear semblance to the sheesh mahal of Agra Fort. The ceiling has been painted in the hue of gold. The palace has been restored and renovated lately.

The pillars and floor are done in white marble. Worth mention over here is a carving  depicting butterflies, a lotus, a cobra snake, an elephant trot a scorpion and a corn all infused into an image of a flower. The arches are multi cupped. How the palaces in the Amer Fort used to remain cool ?

This palace was cooled in the hot summer months with flowing water falling onto the lemon glass screens. This palace overlooks the Maota Lake and presents a picturesque presentation. Right opposite the sheesh mahal and Jal Mahal is the Sukh Niwas. Characteristics sandalwood door and a marble Abshaar (Water cascade) flowing across the midst of the palace leading into the four quartered garden used tocool the inner environs. In between the Sukh Nivas and Sheesh Mahal is a low profile garden in a hexagonal shape with a star-shaped fountain at the center.

Man Singh Palace–

King Man Singh I is known to have 12 Queens this palace has separate residential quarters for all these 12 Queens. The architecture is primarily made from red sandstone and the marble is absent. The walls have been decorated with paintings and figurines of Hindu deities.

Man Singh Palace known as Ranivas

The central courtyard has a pillared hall where the queen used to hold a conclave. The residential quarters of the king were on the top floor and are supposed to be connected separately and discreetly with residential quarters of 12 respective queens. The architecture is quite different from the architecture of Deewan E Khas. This area was also called as zenana and “Antapur”(inner confines of a palace) these terms are synonyms of the Arabic term “Harem”.

Maota Lake-

Right underneath the fort of Amer is the Maota Lake. This is a semi-arid region with not much rainfall all the rainwater was conserved in this lake called Maota. Most of the palaces in Amer fort overlook the Maota Lake posing a picturesque view of the same. Since the last few years owing to the failure of rainfall the Maota lake is now being fed by water drawn from Besal Pur dam.

Kesar Kyari and Dil Aram garden-

These are two lovely gardens which are interspersed by the Maota Lake. Dil-Araam means heart soothing. These days the elephant ride starts from one side of the Dil-Aram gardens, you can hire an elephant on a first come first serve basis.

The king wanted to grow saffron in Amer so he brought the seeds for the same from Kashmir the plantation was done in a garden surrounded by a lake (Maota) but the extreme temperature over here resulted in the failure of the experiment. The garden still exists and is called the Kesar kyari garden.
