This city is historically known as Pragjyotispur and was the capital of Kamrupa Empire. This claims the status of being the largest metropolitan city in the North Eastern states. Guhawati is an ideal location for all the incursions into the other famous north Eastern states of India.</p>
<p><strong>History of Guwahati</strong></p>
<p>The history of Guwahati dates back to thousands of year back to the era of Mahabharata when this city was the capital of Narkasur. Thus in many ancient Scriptures and in the Purana’s, we find the mention of the city. The excavations done at Ambani prove the history of the Kushana age from 2BCE to 1<sup>st</sup> DCF. These excavations prove that this city was an important center of trade, commerce even up to 9<sup>th</sup> century A.D.</p>

They had a big setback at the battle of saraighat in 1671 when they were crushed under the leadership of Lachit Dorphukar.</p>
