Purdah system-

The word “Purdah” is of Persian origin. It means a veil or screening of a person (mostly women) from the rest of humanity. In Mughal times it was strictly followed and the royal ladies always followed the laid down rules of the system. The ladies of Zenana were not allowed to be seen or noticed by outside men this was done by specially designed palanquins, Naqab, Hijab, Burqah and specially designed Jharokhas (windows) in the royal palaces, these windows facilitated only one sided view while the ladies could watch the court proceeding without being noticed by outsiders of the court.The Rajput ruling clan of Jaipur had very close cordial relations with the ruling Mughal clan. This system of purdah found its way into the Rajputana and the royal ladies of the palace also started following it religiously. Though Burqa and hizab were not used by the Rajput women instead they used “Ghoonghat” a sort of veil or an extension of their clothing to cover their faces, The practice is even now followed very commonly in the rural folks of Rajasthan , On your Rajasthan tour you can see how rural women having long ghoonghat carry many utensils on their head and ferry water to their homes.

Jharokha-

The classic and regal Havelis ( Bungalow) have a very common prominent feature this is called Jharokha. One special reference of Jharokha was the custom of Jharokha darshan, a custom started by Mughal emperor Akbar in which he used to appear publicly on a jharokha of his palace. This custom was also carried on by his son ( Emperor Jahangeer) and his grandson( emperor Shahjahan).

A fine city Jaipur came into existence in the early eighteenth century, Fine contoured avenues, spacious markets were an attraction of the new city. The ladies could not see and be a party to any royal parade and procession which were so much an integral part of any festivity. This all was because of the Rajput ladies following the purdah system. King Mahraja Sawai Partap Singh built a wind palace, a series of stacked Jharokhas looking like a honey bee comb. This was built to facilitate the royal ladies to be a part of the festivities and witness to royal processions and the hustle and bustle of busy bazaars without being noticed by outsiders. Alongside this picturesque view the ladies could enjoy the cool breeze blowing through the lattice screen windows. In 1799 the palace was ready. Laal Chand Ustad was the chief architect of this grand project. The Hawa mahal is the most photographed building of Jaipur city.

Architecture of  Hawa Mahal-

The popular picture of Hawa mahal is not its front façade but it’s the eastern rear end leading to a busy road underneath. The hawa mahal is a five storied building it rises to 50 meters in height. The outlook of the hawa mahal is that of a bee hive or honey comb. The jharokhas are stacked up numbering a stupendous 953. The jharokhas or the windows are delicately carved from red and pink sand stone , the lattice screens look fragile and beautiful with curved dome tops. The first two floors have fountains inside to cool the breeze blowing through the lattice screens. Coloured glass panels have also been used, the upper three floors are nothing more than a room associated with the windows with no staircase leading up to the last two floors(only ramp), The shape of the palace resembles a crown some people say it was made to look like a crown of lord Krishna. History And Architecture of City Palace 

This area of Rajasthan has also been called as Dhundhar, it is domain of Meena tribe ruled by Kachwaha clan of Rajput Kings.  The capital city of Amber was settled amidst Aravali hills the scope of further development and growth was not there, the water supply sources were also limited and few so the King Sawai Raja Jai Singh II started making a new city of Jaipur around 10 kilometers away from Amber. This was the first geometrically planned city of India. The designs were made in consultation with a vastu shastri (An ancient Indian science of Architecture quite similar to Chinese Feng shui) Vidhyadhar Bhattacharya. He was a Bengali scholar serving in the courts of the Jaipur King. The city was divided into nine blocks, while two were reserved for constructing royal palaces and state offices the rest seven blocks were to be used by the general public in making shops, houses etc. The name pink city is derived from the stucco painted pink around 100 years back to commemorate the crowning of King Edward VII.

The pink stucco has been outlined with white colour border this attributes to the peculiarity of Jaipur city. In 1727 the Jaipur city was completed while the construction of city palace went on for generations as the successive kings renovated and redesigned the existing palaces according to their tastes and vogue. This is the only living palace, the royalty still lives inside the precincts of City palace. Many parts of City palace are maintained as they were under the royal era and rule of the Maharajas. A visit to city palace will take you on a visit to the bygone era.

The City palace is a very well-designed palace with spacious avenues and courtyards, the buildings are old and charismatic, revealing the fine taste and reality of the masters who once lived here. The architecture is a mix of Hindu Rajputana style along with infusion of Islamic and cues from the Victorian era architecture.

The city palace is divided into palaces like Chandra mahal palace, Mubarak Mahal palace, Sarvato Bhadra, Sabha Niwas etc. The entry for common tourist is possible through Udaipol gate and Virndra pol gate though now only Udaipol gate is being used, It is a single storied structure with a beautiful arched gate having alcoves on either side, there are two regal caparisoned elephants on either side of the gate giving it a unique royal feel .As you move inside there are hairpin bends inside leading to the ticket window.

Buggy Khana-The ticket window has some shops alongside whereyou can buy some souvenirs from your Jaipur tour. The Buggy khana is a collection of horse carriages, Palanquins used in the bygone era. The state carriages used in the procession for carrying the deity are also on display, worth special mention is a Victorian-era carriage gifted to the Maharaja of Jaipur by the Queen Victoria. These carriages were drawn by a multitude of horses.

Sarvato Bhadra-

A large courtyard which has a single storied structure on an elevated platform , this is an open verandah with enclosed rooms on four sides, the colour of the building is pink the arches are multi cusped with marble columns underneath. This was very similar to the Mughal court of Deewan E Khaas. A court where the king held private meetings with his consortium of ministers to solve the state problems. The ceiling has been decorated with classy crystal chandeliers. The walls are decorated with display of an array of spears and arrows.On one side of the building encapsulated in glass panels are two shining silver caskets. These caskets are 5 feet 2 inches in height. Made up of shining silver each weighs 34 kilograms and can store 4000 litres of water. They were made by melting 14000 silver coins by master silver smith in two year span. The king who was a staunch hindu drank only water from river ganges he took these caskets filled with ganga water on his tour of England .Thus these casks are called Gangajali. The sarvato bhadra was also a place for royal festivities and regal get together.

A large clock tower is visible from the sarvato bhadra. The clock was imported and infused a sense of discipline in the royal courts and palace.

Pritam Niwas Chowk

This is courtyard commonly called as the courtyard of four seasons. There are four gates opening into this courtyard, these gates have different design themes and are attributed to different Hindu Gods. The north east facing gate is called Peacock gate this gate represents autumn season and lord Vishnu is the presiding deity, Vishnu is known to be the sustainer of all life form. The north west facing gate has green colour with waves pattern fresco thus called “leheriya” it is dedicated to lord Ganesh the lord with elephant head and known to be God of auspiciousness. The gate towards south east has lotus pattern and represents lord Shiva and his consort Parvati,Shiva is the God of destruction this gate is a gate for summer season.The south west facing gate has rose petal formation thus representing the feminine power of the goddess.

Chandra Mahal Palace

This is the present residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur (if you are fortunate you might have a glimpse of him).A seven storied palace, only ground floor is open for common tourist ( you can visit the upper stories by buying a separate ticket). The seven storied palace is a dream destination and the palaces inside are nothing but a dream in real.The top story has the one quarter flag insignia of the Royalty of Jaipur flying high, the sawaai title was conferred on Maharaja Sawaai Jai Singh II by the Mughal emperor Aurangazeb. Since then a quarter flag flies atop the flag of Jaipur dynasty. The first two floors of Chandra mahal are called as the placae of pleasure (Sukh Niwas) the third floor is called as the palace of colours (Rang mahal) the name is derived from the colored imported glass work (imported from Belgium) this glass work is similar to the glass work seen in some European churches.The next floor has blue coloured ceiling . Shri niwas is the name of next two floors, the top is also called the crown (Mukut mandir)temple. This is where the royal flag is hoisted.

Mubarak Mahal-

The name literally means the auspicious palace . The era of its construction is 19^th century end. The palace has a prominent influence of European design. The famous Amer road with Jal Mahal on one side leads you all the way to the Aravali hills. These are the hills where the Amer Fort exists. Amer Fort sometimes called Amber fort is located just 11 km far from the heart of Jaipur. The Amer is a city fortified by walls and it is visible existing on the hill slopes around Amer Fort. The Amer Fort was surrounded by the habitation of Meena people an indigenous tribe.

How to reach Amer Fort?

The fort is situated on a high elevation, there are three ways to approach the fort. You can ride an elephant in the morning which costs 1100 INR for two people, this is an amazing experience as you ride all the way saddled on top of an elephant. Second, you can take a smaller route ascending the old steps right up to the Amer Fort. Third, you can ride a Jeep vehicle which will take you up to the Amer Fort.

What are the places to visit in the Amer fort?

Jaleb Chowk-

This is a large courtyard inside the Amer fort having two entrance gates. The elephants and the steps lead you inside through the Suraj Pol or the Sun gate, right opposite is the lunar gate, if you are riding jeep you will enter the courtyard through lunar gate. This huge courtyard was the parade and congregation ground. The royal army used to parade over here in those times.

What is the History of Shila Devi ?

The gate leading to the Deewan E aam is called the Singh Pol meaning the Lion Gate. Hindu Temple of Goddess Kali is situated on the right side of Singh Pol. The effigy of the Goddess is said to be brought by King Man Singh I from Bengal as he won over the King of Jeesore in 1604. The Goddess is also called as Shila Devi and is known to be the presiding goddess of the Chaitanya cult. Passing through the Singh Pol you can note the old wooden gate and the lock which is still in working condition.

Deewan E Aam-

This is a pavilion having large open space and a building comprising of 27 colonnades and 48 pillars. This building is known as Dewan E aam and was a court for the common people. The King used to preside over a congregation of common people.

How Amer Fort resembles Agra Fort?

The style of architecture is very similar to the architecture of Agra Fort as the Kachwaha rulers were subordinates of the Mughal Emperors. The pillars have elephant-shaped arches on top known to be a classic example of the Hindu style of architecture. Red sandstone was mined from the mines of Karauli while the white marble was mined from makrana, these are the same mines from where marble used in the construction of Tajmahal was mined.

Ganesh Pol–

A multi-storied gate elegantly decorated with multi-colored frescoes and mosaics is known as the Ganesh pol this connects Deewan E AAM with Deewan E Khas. The top floor of the gate has huge lattice screens the queens were supposed to have a watch over the proceedings of Dewan E aam from here without being noticed. Ganesh is the name of the elephant Hindu God , a picture of the same at the entrance is known to bring good luck to the household.

Why Dewaan E Khaas is known as Sheesh Mahal ?

Dewaan E khaas or the house of Public audience is also known by the name of “Sheesh mahal”. The walls  have a mosaic of glass embedded in the stucco, the walls bear semblance to the sheesh mahal of Agra Fort. The ceiling has been painted in the hue of gold. The palace has been restored and renovated lately.

The pillars and floor are done in white marble. Worth mention over here is a carving  depicting butterflies, a lotus, a cobra snake, an elephant trot a scorpion and a corn all infused into an image of a flower. The arches are multi cupped. How the palaces in the Amer Fort used to remain cool ?

This palace was cooled in the hot summer months with flowing water falling onto the lemon glass screens. This palace overlooks the Maota Lake and presents a picturesque presentation. Right opposite the sheesh mahal and Jal Mahal is the Sukh Niwas. Characteristics sandalwood door and a marble Abshaar (Water cascade) flowing across the midst of the palace leading into the four quartered garden used tocool the inner environs. In between the Sukh Nivas and Sheesh Mahal is a low profile garden in a hexagonal shape with a star-shaped fountain at the center.

Man Singh Palace–

King Man Singh I is known to have 12 Queens this palace has separate residential quarters for all these 12 Queens. The architecture is primarily made from red sandstone and the marble is absent. The walls have been decorated with paintings and figurines of Hindu deities.

Man Singh Palace known as Ranivas

The central courtyard has a pillared hall where the queen used to hold a conclave. The residential quarters of the king were on the top floor and are supposed to be connected separately and discreetly with residential quarters of 12 respective queens. The architecture is quite different from the architecture of Deewan E Khas. This area was also called as zenana and “Antapur”(inner confines of a palace) these terms are synonyms of the Arabic term “Harem”.

Maota Lake-

Right underneath the fort of Amer is the Maota Lake. This is a semi-arid region with not much rainfall all the rainwater was conserved in this lake called Maota. Most of the palaces in Amer fort overlook the Maota Lake posing a picturesque view of the same. Since the last few years owing to the failure of rainfall the Maota lake is now being fed by water drawn from Besal Pur dam.

Kesar Kyari and Dil Aram garden-

These are two lovely gardens which are interspersed by the Maota Lake. Dil-Araam means heart soothing. These days the elephant ride starts from one side of the Dil-Aram gardens, you can hire an elephant on a first come first serve basis.

The king wanted to grow saffron in Amer so he brought the seeds for the same from Kashmir the plantation was done in a garden surrounded by a lake (Maota) but the extreme temperature over here resulted in the failure of the experiment. The garden still exists and is called the Kesar kyari garden.
