Kamasutra of vatsyayana is an aphorism of love. The sage vatsyayana lived in between 2 to 3 century A.D. and penned down his views of on Kam Shastra in the form of a treatise. So the text of the kamasutra is not meerly art of love making or sex relations but something more. It explains how to churn out the utmost satisfaction by the way of love, sex, music and melodrama. If also clamours for the equatable relations of men and women. He prescribes 64 positions of love making. Not only he narrates about love practice but also prescribes the way of living such as a person should get up early in the morning, after being fresh he should wash his teeth and exhale fresh aroma. He should take bathe daily, after bathe appear before the glass for the personable visage, should do shave every 3 days later. He should wash the nails and sweat.

The Urge of Kamasutra

The Hindu sculptures tells about the 4 major goals of life known as Purushartha –Dharma , Artha, kama, Moksha. Dharma means righteous conduct, Artha signifies means of life. Kama means desire, passion, enjoyment of life and sexual connotations, Moksha is the liberation or emancipation from the cycle of deaths. Thus kama is the third important. Goal of human life, kama Sutra is the righteous philosophy of the adulthood and integral part of vedic literature.

As regards sex the Victorians were extremely prudish. Even a minor impropriety of dress would send the Victorian martinets into a paroxysm of rage. Victorian parents were quite domineering. In the Victorian era the attempts were made to quash sexual urges similar to the victorian epoch in India during the medieval ages sex was considered as inhibition and people were afraid of talking over the subject in open and linked it with morality.

Place Near Water Ideal For Lovemaking

Vatsyayana narrates in his text about the best place for lovemaking. He opines that a place which is near the water body such as lake or pond and if it is surrounded by gardens it is ideal. Following the norms many rulers and the nobles devised palaces and mansions near the water bodies like Hindola Mahal, Jal Mahal etc. These kings and maharaja’s used to retire to such places with the chosen ladies of the harem and find solace. Vatsyayana also ponders over the palace are or the living palace. He allures that the living area should be surrounded by lush greenery and fragrant flowers with a cozy bed having a canopy and wreathes all around.

The concept of resorts luxury five star hotels In India follows the pattern. The Rajput rulers and Mughals in their harem had the privilege of making such palaces which had enormous waterbodies-fountains, hammams all having nice garden setup. Imagine the Sheesh Mahal in the Agra fort which is very closely built to the famed angoori bagh. In this gorgeous bath the celebrated ladies of the harem used to enjoy spa and shower and prepare themselves on the soft tunes of music. The fragnance of the rose petals, jasmine flowers used to persuade and arouse the amorous feeling. Thus such places used to work as the food for kamasutra theme.

Not only the inner palaces used to have such provisions but these mighty rulers made many provisions for the outside hunting resorts, and recreation places in the forest areas and near the water bodies. Shikargarh of Jahangir, Shahjahan near Dholpur in Rajasthan, the glass house at Sikandra Agra narrate the same story.

Famous Indian Temples Idolizing Sex

There are several temples in India which are famous for sculptures, To name a few Khajuraho temples, Sun temple of konark, Sun temple modhera, Virupaksha temple, Hampi. Indian society since ages has been considered as an orthodox society. But this is not the real case. This land saw the emergence of vatsyayana and several famous temples mentioned above were built in the ancient times. The conception of raising the erotic sculpture work is that a person should be on pure form entering the temple premises. He must ward off his carnal pleasures and lust. In order to quench the desire of humans most of the outer wall of the temples have such carvings , so that the Human must get rid of sensual pleasures outside.

In such temples you visualize many amorous scenes. Such as multiple sex of humans and animals in Khazuraho group of temples. Similarly the Virupaksha temple Hampi present erotic imagery on the outer walls. A noteworthy scene is a nude women being looked by a group of persons and advised. Ranakpur temples also prove testimony to the open minded progressive set of brains of the early civilization. Kamasutra mentions that a female should learn the ways of this practice from the close friend already married. This also includes the playing of musical instruments, drawing, culinary art, composing poems, hair dressing etc. Female as per Vatsayana were expected to be like mother Annapurna while in the kitchen preparing food for the family and she should emulate a professional sex worker while being in bed with husband.

Why Khazuraho Temple Were Built ?

The impressive temples at Khazuraho in Chhatarpur district of Madhyapradesh were erected by the Chandela rulers. In the medieval times these temples are fine specimen of art and sculptures work spread in 9 square kilometers area. The khazuraho group of temples deal with the eight subjects of vatsyayana such as fondling, kissing, embrace etc.

Often the thinkers and art lovers have differences of opinions about the theory of construction and the purpose. Obviously many of these temples were made for worship of the hindu deities and still some of them such as kandhariya mahadev has the pious shivlingam. The purpose of these temples making is to prepare the society for prolongation of the human species. The point to be noted is that with the growing popularity of Jainism and Buddhism in the society made the social fabric effeminate. People were more turned towards the tenets of Brahmacharya and renunciation propagated by the theology. Such society was prudish and took sex as a taboo. Thus the activity of the life force and procreation was dwindling and it created a vacuum in the multiplications of the human race.

Thus the pressed society was led a strong and to put them in the right direction of understanding the value of procreation, the erotic art at the temples of Khazuraho was envisaged. So that the common folks could be swayed by the feeling of love and sex and can indulge in mirth. If you watch closely the several episodes such as the nubile Apsaras (heavenly maidens) or nayitens depict the same passion.

Some others think of the stone erotica as a influence of Tantrika cult of balancing male and female force what is known as shiva-shakti together. In such state of mind humans leave their animal instict and soar to a blissful state. The zenith of pleasure in men and women arouse different awareness

Real beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. “this saying is very apt to the kamasutra theme. The subject dealt by the ancient sage Vatsyayan is not a sex manual, rather it is treatise on the art of living such as nature of love, finding a suitable life partner, pleasure seeking sources in human life etc The text is written in a mixed form of prose and poetry has many chapters and cantos which deal with courtship, maintaining, vigour, managing married life and looking graceful. It all deals with the pivotal theme of love which creates desire and mentions when it is good or when just opposite These excerpts of kamasutra were transformed in real form earlier and later the book was transformed in oral form earlier and later the book was published on 1883 by Richard Burtan.

The darkness is the symbol of negative powers like violence, greed, injustice, oppression, and suffering. Being brutal and sacrificed in the name of religion is not past, it still is prevailing in the so-called modern society of India or elsewhere. There are people who strike a Faustian Bargain for petty reasons of money, power procreation, and for other gains. Many of these Strange Traditions are banned by different governments all over the world but still, we see some of them. As psychology says man is wild inborn, the process of evolution has evolved him/her to be refined. In India also you can find several unusual practices in various tribes, communities, and religions.

Bani Festival Theme Kill or Get Killed

This ritual takes place in the Devaragattan temple in the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh India. On the eve of Dussehra thousand of devotees, wielding lathis hit each other on the head until the day break to commemorate the killing of a demon by Lord Shiva. Lots of people get injured in this practice annually.

Feeding Snakes with Milk

India has a long tradition of bonding with the snakes and people have much reverence to the snakes. Every year on the occasion of Nag Panchmi the devotees feed snakes with milk to have the blessings of Nag devtas. There is a lot of superstition associated with snakes in India, the charmers claim to make the snakes dance with their special flutes(Been) while truth is that snakes are making a move to attack the charmer who is playing flute, No one believes that snakes don’t have ear and can’t hear the flute, the snake charmers are believed to call the snakes by playing been-the flute, this practice has been made famous by the Bollywood movies, in fact, one such superstition is that snake charmer can cure a snake bite patient by recalling the snake because of this superstition thousands of snakebite victims fail to reach the hospital and get proper medical attention.

Self Flagellation- One of the Strange Traditions

This sort of practice is still prevalent. This is done in the name of religion for the atonement of sins done in past. In this ritual, the practitioner hits him with a whip attached with blades. This is more common in the Christian community of the Philippines and Mexico. Even in the Shia cult of Islam, it is done in the countries like India, Iran, on the eve of Muharram. Christians believe that by doing this they can attain a better position in heaven. On the other hand, Shia followers do it to commemorate the martyrdom of Hussain.

Indian maharaja rolled in power as pelf is famed for their lavish lifestyle. Most of the Indian princely states were annexed to the Indian republic in 1947 but still many of such royals hold a strong position and maintain royal pageantry. The ancient royalties and the nobles had a high standard of living and commoners were much lagging behind in the use of resources. The present treatise “King and Subjects” is related to the maharaja lives, the way they were enjoying the riches, and the style they were leading. Besides it shows the standard of Maharaja Lifestyle & common man.

King and Subjects living difference

Most of the Indian maharajas, the Mughals, the Nawabs like Aurangzeb and Babur were living in grand palaces. They managed to make forts and palaces which had strategic locations, were eloquently designed, and were equipped with leisurely amenities. As you witness any medieval times forts or palaces in Rajasthan or in down south of India you will be mesmerized to see the artwork and the conveniences of such leisure palaces. These palaces had fine tapestries, rugs, window panels, chandeliers. Such grand palaces had the provision of hygienic kitchens with a wide variety of culinary experiences. The humans were modeled after the Turkish bath systems where separate arrangements were done of hot and cold water, modern jacuzzi, spa facilities were also available. The royalties used ubtan process with the help of turmeric and other herbal extracts from rosewater, allover, etc. They used it as a skin cleanser.

King and Subjects body care

As is widely known that in ancient times soap was absent, similarly shampoo was not invented. The royalties used neem leaves, bark as well as reetha and shikakai to prepare the material similar to modern time shampoo. The royal ladies took hair bathe with herbal waters and a secret paste made of exotic leaves extracts. The Mughal royalty used heena mixed with the other barks of trees. Heena has an antibiotic quality like neem. Noorjehan improvised the spa which was first of all discovered by Cleopatra who made the first spa off the dead sea, Noorjehan invented the Atar of rose for spa and for perfume as sprinkling purposes. The royalties used apple cider vinegar in their bathtub.

While the royalties had immense facilities to procure the herbal extracts from far and wide, the common folks were devoid of such privileges. The common men used Multani clay as a mud pack on their face, In those times the absence of detergent and castic soda made them wash dirty linen in hot water. The ubiquitous dhobi ghats in the old Indian cities are still visible where you get to see the big cauldron being heated with water and old washable clothes being submerged in to it.

Story of Soap and detergent

Soap was invented nearly 300 BCE in Babylon. The name SOPA is derived from the Latin word “Sapindus” sap means soap and induces signify from India. This plant is found in tropical climates. The nuts of these plants were collected and dried in sunlight and stored for some time and later soaked into hot water before use. This made the water soapy which was used as soap. The common name for such a tree is soap based on reetha, Washnuts, etc. In ancient India, the people used reetha as soap and still ladies use Amla reetha and shikakai for hair growth. Reetha and Amla are packed with antioxidants and keep the scalp healthy. Shikakai whose botanical name is Acacia Concinna has a great amount of vitamin c and helps hair care, the use of Multani clay and its mudpack clean the dead cells of the skin and make it glossy. It soaks impurities.

Similarly in the olden times, people use reh soil to wash clothes. Reh is a saline efflorescence rising on the surface found in the Indo Gangetic plains. This makes soil worthless for cultivation. This is a mixture of sodium salts people used Ash to wash utensils and wash hands in the absence of soap. Hand cleaning ash was derived from the hearths and people rubbed it to inactivate bacteria and viruses.

System of schooling of King and Subjects in India

If we try to study the chronology of schools, it goes long back to the epic period, beforehand the schooling was done in a different way. In those days the prince and the affluent children were sent to ashrams of Rishis. These learned scholars used to reside in forests away from society and relied upon the gratuities of the rich people and the kings. Imagine lord Rama, Krishna, and Pandavas all went to such ashrams and the education was imparted to them on merits, This education included morality, theology, weaponry, politics, administration etc. The disciples were discerned on the basis of their inborn skills and thus they were prepared as a better soldier, commander, ruler, and many other visages. The education was all based on interaction and chantings without the written facility.

The education system strove with the arrival of paper. In the absence of paper, the writings were done on tree leaves, copper plates, tree backs, leather parchments, etc for writing purposes, the calligraphy was done with a pointed stick of reed on bamboos or the peacock plum. The vegetable colors and soot were used as ink. This system changed much in medieval times. In the Islamic era, the madrasas were built for the studies of the Quran and some other subjects. At the same time, the Gurukuls and Sanskrit schools were opened. During the Islamic rule and the tenure of Rajput rules, the royalties had great scholars and teachers to impart education to the royal kids. Bairam Khan was the notable tutor of Akabar. Similarly, Sati un Nisa Khanam was the tutor of Shahjahan’s daughter.

The history of toothbrush of King and Subjects

The history of chewing of teeth can be traced nearly 3000 years back we found mention of toothpicks and dental care first by the Greek doctor Hippocrates. Similarly, Chinese and Greek texts are replete with dental care.

In the early time, there was no toothbrush, so the royals and common men used chew sticks which were made by thin twigs with frayed ends. These twigs in India were called Datoon and were rubbed against teeth. The brush was first invented in china in 1948 and first, they used boar bristles in place of nylon. In India the twigs of neem and Miswak were used to make a toothbrush. Miswak or Salvadora persica tree twigs were used with salt.

Media in ancient India.

In the pre-historic age, the cave paintings were a sort of media and this accelerated with the invention of paper, Indian media has passed from mimetic stages to the electronic age now. In the olden era in India, newspapers, magazines and other media were not available. It was the Bengal gazette which was the first newspaper of India. In the early times of maharajas, the news was communicated through a public announcement and was called Munadi. The announcement was done by the proclaimers on the beats of drums. Besides this, the announcement was done during festive occasions or gatherings,

The earliest traces of media can be traced back to the Romans where they started the fastest courier services which spread the dispatches and the news everywhere with a wide network of roads and waterways. In India bards or the jagas were also used as harbingers who were roaming around and spreading the news. Like the Romans, King Ashoka used the media of inscriptions all around his empire.

Kitchenware of king & subjects

If you visit the private museums or the government museum of India have a chance to look at the grand Havelis of Mandawa or elsewhere, you encounter the kitchenware, crockeries, and utensils of the Maharajas and the rich men. In case you visit the museum of Scindia palace you get to see the dining sets valuable crockery and the silver toy train running on dining table. Thus the opulent people had the privileges of royal legacy.

The subjects of the kings on the other side had the traditional way of the kitchen. In early times under a thatch underneath a hearth made of much operated by wooden logs. The wood was procured from the plants and the evening heath was ready with cornflour. Imagine the better half blowing the air and trying to evade the flames of fire playing with the tongue. Sometimes the family had to be satisfied with the meagre onion and chapatti in lien of vegetables. The contented they went on sleep peacefully and dreaming of the next day. All they prepared served on a leaf or a bone plate made of clay or the Chinese proclaim.

In the Punjab religion of India the concept of tandoor became popular where the neighborhood had a common tandoor called sanjha choolah. This system in Sikhism was popularized by Guru Nanak Dev Ji to eliminate the caste system and this became very popular. This was easy and practical as well where one tandoor was hot and served to all the persons in the vicinity. Though the tandoors are native to Indus valley civilization but the modern tandoors that we see now is the contribution of the Mughals as they were very fond of Tandoori items.

Drinks of Kings & subjects

The maharajas and the royalties had discovering taste and various sorts of drinks were invented time to time during their region. These kings were great lovers of lemonades, best alcohol and wine. The great rulers had different drinks from south to north and east to west. So surprisingly the Mughals in 16th century used ice from Kashmir for the Kulfi Falooda and the other drinks. The palaces and drinks of the royal are good themes for the YOLO Tours in India.

The subjects of the royalties had the access to the countryside and local drinks like sharbat and Lassi only. In alcohol, they used hooch which is a sort of monshine.
