Atal Tunnel – A New Gateway to Leh

The erstwhile prime minister of India Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpai initiated a great job in connecting India with a wide network of national highways. On 3 June 2000 he announced the project of this tunnel which is presently known as Atal Tunnel border road. Organization was given the task to accomplish in 2002 and the foundation stone was laid in 2010 by Sonia Gandhi, In 2019, this tunnel known as Rohtang tunnel was officially named as Atal tunnel. On 3 October 2020 this tunnel was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Atal tunnel is the longest highway tunnel in India which is built under Rohtang pass on the Leh-Manali highway in the Himachal Pradesh state this tunnel based at an elevation of 10000 feet is named after Atal Bihari Vajpai and has a length of 9.02 kms.

Atal tunnel is very important from strategic point of view and it is going to give a big impetus to boost tourism in lahaul spiti by providing a lot of employment to the localites.

How Atal Tunnel has Minimized Travel Time?

With the inauguration of Atal Tunnel the travel time between Manali and keylong has reduced to mere few hours and there is no effect of weather conditions. The easier route through Grampu was nearly 116 kms and used to take normally 5 to 6 hours at least. Now the distance is reduced to cover this and the entire stretch can be traveled in 2 hours.Earlier the Rohtang pass was closed throughout the winter months owing to very high snow fall at his altitude.

The south portal of Atal tunnel is nearly 25 kms away from Manali. Thus you can cover this distance in 45 minutes and later travel from another 15 minutes inside the tunnel. Thus the number of northeastern states of India has risen to eight presently. On account of the Interdependence of all the northeastern states, they are known as the 7 sisters.

History of Seven Sisters of India

If we trace back the history we can find the origin of Northeast of India during the British epoch. From 1840 to 1870 it was a part of a large Bengal province in India under the Nawab, with the independence of India the northeast came into existence and comprised of Assam, Manipur, and Tripura states where Assam was a large state which was previously known as Kamrupa During the British period Shillong was the capital of Assam. In 1972 while Meghalaya was made a state and Shillong were made its capital, in lien of Shillong Dispur was decided to be the Assamese capital.

Assam-Assam is the largest state of the northeast and covers nearly 79000 square kilometers of area. Assam is known globally for its tea gardens. The legends say that the British first noticed the presence of oil under elephant feet who were employed in the task of having wooden logs. Sikkim– The New Entry in the North Eastern States

This newly formed state borders Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet. It has the land scape of the lofty Kanchenjunga Mountain. It is the abode of glaciers, grasslands, and wildflowers. Ratangad Fort –This medieval fort lies on the borders of Ahmadnagar and Thana district, It is a paradise for those who love history and nature, this is a four-century-old fort overlooking Bhandardara which is the oldest catchment area. Two forts are located 4250 ft above sea level and lie in the Ajoba mountain range.

Location:- The famed Ratanagad fort is located at Ratanwadi in Maharashtra, State of India. The fort lies in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra.

How to reach Ratangad?

You can reach this fort from Ahmadnagar or Thane or Mumbai.

There are 2 routes- One starts from Samrad village and the second from village Ratanwadi. The base village Ratanwadi can be approached by boat from Bhandardara. If you desire to travel by road you can reach Ghoti Bhandardara. In case you do the journey by boat to Ratangad it will be a 6 km boat trip and later you have to walk 4 km nearly to approach Ratangad, the trekking route from Ratanwadi is easy and passes through the lush green forests.
