Khajuraho is globally renowned for its stunning group of medieval temples adorned with intricate and expressive sculptures. But while the UNESCO World Heritage Temples often steal the spotlight, this ancient town in Madhya Pradesh has much more to offer beyond its sacred stone walls. From cultural experiences to natural attractions, Khajuraho is a destination that blends history, art, spirituality, and rustic charm. Here you can explore Things to Do in Khajuraho Beyond the Temples.

Explore the Raneh Falls Canyon

Just 20 km from Khajuraho, Raneh Falls is a natural wonder often missed by typical tourists. The waterfall is carved out by the Ken River and is surrounded by a 5 km-long canyon of pure volcanic rock, with hues of red, pink, and grey. The best time to visit is during the monsoon or post-monsoon season when the falls are in full flow.

This area is also part of the Ken Gharial Sanctuary, where you might spot crocodiles, birds, and other wildlife. It’s a perfect spot for nature photography and peaceful walks.

Attend the Khajuraho Dance Festival

Every February, the Khajuraho Dance Festival brings the town alive with vibrant performances of classical Indian dance styles such as Kathak, Odissi, Bharatnatyam, Kuchipudi, and Kathakali. Held in the backdrop of the illuminated Western Group of Temples, this cultural event is a visual and spiritual treat.

Apart from dance, there are also handicraft exhibitions, food stalls, and musical shows. If your visit aligns with the festival dates, it’s an unmissable experience.

Visit the Tribal and Folk Art Museum

Located near the Western Group of Temples, the Tribal and Folk Art Museum is part of the MP State Museum setup. It offers insights into the life, beliefs, tools, and traditions of the tribal communities of Madhya Pradesh. The collection includes traditional jewelry, masks, weapons, paintings, and musical instruments.

This museum adds cultural depth to your Khajuraho experience and gives context to the motifs and figures found in temple carvings.

Discover the Adivart Tribal Museum

Another excellent museum is the Adivart Tribal and Cultural Museum, which showcases the art and life of the indigenous people from central India. The museum is operated by a local NGO and includes interactive exhibits, dioramas, and handcrafted items made by tribal artists.

If you enjoy learning about local lifestyles, craftsmanship, and heritage beyond the mainstream, this place is worth an hour or two.

Enjoy a Light and Sound Show

In the evening, the Light and Sound Show held at the Western Group of Temples is a magical way to understand the rich history of Khajuraho. Narrated in both English and Hindi, the show combines music, lights, and storytelling to recount the rise and fall of the Chandela dynasty and the purpose behind the temples’ creation.

It’s informative, atmospheric, and a great way to relax after a day of sightseeing.

Shop for Local Handicrafts

Khajuraho’s small markets are perfect for picking up souvenirs, tribal artwork, handloom fabrics, stone carvings, and miniature sculptures. Visit local shops near the temple complex or explore the weekly rural haat (market) for traditional items. Bargaining is common and part of the fun!

You can also find shops that sell Khajuraho-themed postcards, paintings, and books that delve deeper into the region’s art and mythology.

Take a Village Walk or Bicycle Tour

Khajuraho is surrounded by rustic countryside and charming villages. A guided village walk, or bicycle tour, can take you through farms, potters’ huts, small temples, and everyday life in rural India. It’s an eye-opening experience and a nice way to connect with the locals.

Some tours also include sunrise or sunset views over the fields, adding a peaceful, scenic element to your trip.

Visit Beni Sagar Dam and Lake

For a quiet escape, head to Beni Sagar Lake, located about 1 km from the main temple complex. You can enjoy boating, picnicking, or simply relaxing by the water. It’s especially popular among locals and offers a pleasant natural backdrop.

It’s a great spot for those looking to take a break from temple-hopping and enjoy some open space and fresh air.

How to Reach Khajuraho

Khajuraho is well-connected by air, rail, and road, making it accessible from major Indian cities:

By Air: The Khajuraho Airport (HJR) is located about 5 km from the main town and has flights from Delhi, Varanasi, and other cities. It’s the most convenient way to reach, especially if you’re short on time.

By Train: Khajuraho Railway Station is around 6 km from the town center. It connects to cities like Delhi, Jhansi, Bhopal, and Varanasi. Alternatively, you can take a train to Jhansi (175 km away) and then drive or take a taxi to Khajuraho.

By Road: Khajuraho is connected by good roads to nearby cities such as Jhansi, Satna, Bhopal, and Varanasi. Regular buses and private taxis are available. Driving or hiring a cab is a scenic and flexible way to travel, especially if you plan to explore the surrounding areas.

Final Thoughts

Khajuraho is far more than a destination of temples and sculptures. Its natural beauty, rich tribal culture, vibrant art, and relaxed atmosphere make it a holistic travel experience. Whether you’re into history, adventure, art, or just a slow-paced cultural escape, Khajuraho offers plenty to see and do beyond its famous stone carvings.

So, while the temples may bring you here, let everything else convince you to stay a little longer.

Tucked away in the northeastern region of Rajasthan lies a land that is often overlooked by tourists rushing toward Jaipur, Jodhpur, or Udaipur. But for those who dare to take the offbeat route, Shekhawati offers a treasure trove of art, history, and cultural richness. Known as the “Open-Air Art Gallery of Rajasthan,” Shekhawati is renowned for its ornately painted havelis (mansions) and stunning murals that cover the walls of buildings across its towns and villages. Here you can book Shekhawati Havelis and Murals tour.

If you are an art lover, history enthusiast, or cultural traveler, exploring the havelis and murals of Shekhawati will feel like walking through a living museum.

The Legacy of Shekhawati

The Shekhawati region includes towns such as Mandawa, Nawalgarh, Jhunjhunu, and Fatehpur. Between the 18th and early 20th centuries, this region flourished under the rule of wealthy merchant families, many of whom later moved to larger cities like Mumbai and Kolkata for trade. However, before they left, they built grand havelis adorned with detailed frescoes, murals, and architectural features that rival those in royal palaces.

These paintings weren’t just decorative, they told stories of mythology, daily life, colonial influence, and social customs. From tales of Ramayana and Mahabharata to portraits of British officers, trains, telephones, and even aeroplanes, the murals reflect the intersection of traditional India with the modern world of the time.

Famous Havelis to Explore

Mandawa Havelis

Mandawa is the most popular town in Shekhawati, often used as a base for exploring the region. Some of the most famous havelis here include:

Goenka Double Haveli – Known for its detailed frescoes of elephants, horses, and mythical figures.

Murmuria Haveli – Unique for its modern frescoes of trains, British rulers, and even political leaders like Nehru.

Nawalgarh Havelis

Nawalgarh is considered one of the best-preserved towns in Shekhawati.

Poddar Haveli Museum – Converted into a museum, this haveli showcases not just beautiful murals but also traditional Shekhawati lifestyle and artifacts.

Morarka Haveli – An elegant building known for its rich color palette and Rajput-style wall art.

Fatehpur Havelis

Fatehpur houses the famous:

Nadine Le Prince Haveli – A restored haveli owned by a French artist who has brought international attention to Shekhawati’s heritage.

Jhunjhunu Havelis

Jhunjhunu, the largest town in the region, also offers a number of fresco-filled mansions like:

Khetri Mahal, also called the “Wind Palace,” which is an architectural gem with open corridors and arched walls.

Themes in the Murals

One of the most fascinating aspects of Shekhawati’s havelis is the storytelling through art. Some recurring themes include:

Hindu Mythology: Gods like Krishna, Rama, Shiva, and Ganesha appear frequently in various forms.

Colonial Era: British soldiers, trains, and even scenes of ballroom dances find their way onto the walls.

Social Life: Weddings, festivals, markets, and rural scenes are painted in vibrant detail.

Modern Influences: Airplanes, clocks, and even European inventions became part of the artistic canvas.

These murals reflect a rich historical timeline and changing cultural influences over the years.

Preservation and Challenges

Unfortunately, many of these havelis are in various states of decay, due to a lack of maintenance, harsh weather, and migration of the original families. However, local trusts, private owners, and even foreign artists and historians are making efforts to restore and preserve these architectural wonders.

In towns like Nawalgarh and Fatehpur, some developers have turned havelis into heritage hotels or museums. Helping generate funds for their upkeep and drawing attention from global travelers and art lovers.

How to Reach Shekhawati

By Air: The nearest airport is Jaipur International Airport (around 150–200 km from major Shekhawati towns).

By Train: Jhunjhunu, Nawalgarh, and Sikar have railway stations connected to Jaipur and Delhi.

By Road: Shekhawati is well-connected via roadways, and you can easily hire a cab or take a bus from Jaipur or Delhi.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Shekhawati is during the winter months (October to March). When the weather is pleasant for sightseeing and walking tours.

Conclusion

Shekhawati is not just a destination, it’s a canvas of forgotten grandeur, painted stories, and artistic brilliance. For those seeking an offbeat experience in Rajasthan, away from the usual forts and deserts. Shekhawati offers a rich and colorful journey into the past. Each haveli you step into, each mural you observe, adds a new layer to the story of India’s incredible cultural heritage.

Nestled in the Kurukshetra district of Haryana, Pehowa is a sacred town steeped in ancient history, religious traditions, and spiritual significance. Known primarily as a revered pilgrimage site, Pehowa draws thousands of devotees each year, especially those performing Pind Daan (rituals for ancestors). Beyond its deeply rooted spiritual identity, the town also offers historical and cultural experiences that reflect India’s rich Vedic past. Here are best Things to do in Pehowa.

Whether you’re a pilgrim, a spiritual seeker, or a cultural traveler, Pehowa has something meaningful to offer. Let’s explore the best things to do in this holy town:

Visit the Ancient Saraswati Temple

Pehowa is believed to be situated on the banks of the sacred Saraswati River, which once flowed through the region. The Saraswati Temple, dedicated to the goddess of wisdom and learning, is one of the main attractions in the town. It is said that Rishi Prashar performed rituals here in ancient times. Though the river has dried up, the spiritual presence of Saraswati is still strongly felt. Devotees visit the temple to seek blessings for knowledge and inner peace.

Perform Pind Daan at the Sacred Sarovars

Pehowa is one of the most important sites in North India for performing Pind Daan, the Hindu ritual for paying homage to one’s ancestors. The Prithudak Teerth (now Pehowa) is named after King Prithu, who is said to have performed the first Shraddha here for his father Vena. Pilgrims gather on the ghats near the holy sarovars (ponds), including Prithudak Teerth Sarovar, to perform these rites under the guidance of local priests. The atmosphere is calm, devotional, and deeply moving.

Explore the Kapil Muni Mandir

Located near the main market area, the Kapil Muni Mandir is another spiritual site worth visiting. It is believed that Sage Kapil, a prominent Vedic rishi, meditated here. The temple is simple yet significant, and it offers a quiet space for meditation and reflection. The presence of this temple underscores Pehowa’s connection with India’s ancient sages and scriptures.

Visit the Pandav Teerth and Draupadi Kund

According to legends from the Mahabharata, the Pandavas visited Pehowa during their exile. Pilgrims visit the Pandav Teerth, associated with their journey, to retrace their steps. Nearby, people believe that the Draupadi Kund is a place where Draupadi, the wife of the Pandavas, took a holy bath. These spots add a mythological layer to Pehowa’s spiritual landscape and are great for devotees and mythology enthusiasts alike.

Experience Local Fairs and Festivals

Pehowa comes alive during religious festivals, particularly during Pitru Paksha (15 days dedicated to ancestors) and Gita Jayanti. During these times, the town witnesses a surge of pilgrims, and the markets, temples, and ghats become vibrant with activity. Local fairs offer traditional crafts, sweets, and devotional items. Participating in these festivals provides a deeper cultural experience of the region.

Walk Through the Town’s Heritage

Beyond its temples, Pehowa retains an old-world charm in its narrow lanes, traditional homes, and age-old shops selling religious paraphernalia. Small shrines, ancient Brahmin homes, and kunds (stepwells) dot the town and speak to its historical roots. A casual walk through the town is a journey back in time and allows visitors to absorb its cultural essence.

Explore Nearby Attractions

Since Pehowa is part of the greater Kurukshetra region, you can extend your trip to include nearby attractions like:

Jyotisar, where people believe that Lord Krishna delivered the Bhagavad Gita.

Brahma Sarovar, one of the largest water tanks considered sacred in Hinduism.

Krishna Museum, which showcases art and literature related to Lord Krishna.

These nearby destinations add value to a pilgrimage trip and provide a broader understanding of the region’s historical and religious significance.

How to Reach Pehowa

Roads well-connect Pehowa, placing it about 25 km from Kurukshetra and around 180 km from Delhi.

By Road: Regular buses and taxis are available from Kurukshetra, Karnal, and Ambala.

By Train: In Kurukshetra, they have the nearest railway station, which connects well to Delhi, Chandigarh, and other major cities.

By Air: The closest airport is Chandigarh Airport, about 100 km away. You can also fly into Delhi and drive to Pehowa in around 4 hours.

Conclusion

Pehowa may not be a bustling tourist destination, but its spiritual energy, historical depth, and peaceful ambiance make it a truly special place to visit. Whether you’re there to honor your ancestors, seek wisdom at ancient temples, or explore the stories from the Mahabharata, Pehowa offers a meaningful and enriching experience for every traveler. In a world full of distractions, Pehowa stands as a quiet reminder of India’s enduring spiritual legacy.

Indian maharaja rolled in power as pelf is famed for their lavish lifestyle. Most of the Indian princely states were annexed to the Indian republic in 1947 but still many of such royals hold a strong position and maintain royal pageantry. The ancient royalties and the nobles had a high standard of living and commoners were much lagging behind in the use of resources. The present treatise “King and Subjects” is related to the maharaja lives, the way they were enjoying the riches, and the style they were leading. Besides it shows the standard of Maharaja Lifestyle & common man.

King and Subjects living difference

Most of the Indian maharajas, the Mughals, the Nawabs like Aurangzeb and Babur were living in grand palaces. They managed to make forts and palaces which had strategic locations, were eloquently designed, and were equipped with leisurely amenities. As you witness any medieval times forts or palaces in Rajasthan or in down south of India you will be mesmerized to see the artwork and the conveniences of such leisure palaces. These palaces had fine tapestries, rugs, window panels, chandeliers. Such grand palaces had the provision of hygienic kitchens with a wide variety of culinary experiences. The humans were modeled after the Turkish bath systems where separate arrangements were done of hot and cold water, modern jacuzzi, spa facilities were also available. The royalties used ubtan process with the help of turmeric and other herbal extracts from rosewater, allover, etc. They used it as a skin cleanser.

King and Subjects body care

As is widely known that in ancient times soap was absent, similarly shampoo was not invented. The royalties used neem leaves, bark as well as reetha and shikakai to prepare the material similar to modern time shampoo. The royal ladies took hair bathe with herbal waters and a secret paste made of exotic leaves extracts. The Mughal royalty used heena mixed with the other barks of trees. Heena has an antibiotic quality like neem. Noorjehan improvised the spa which was first of all discovered by Cleopatra who made the first spa off the dead sea, Noorjehan invented the Atar of rose for spa and for perfume as sprinkling purposes. The royalties used apple cider vinegar in their bathtub.

While the royalties had immense facilities to procure the herbal extracts from far and wide, the common folks were devoid of such privileges. The common men used Multani clay as a mud pack on their face, In those times the absence of detergent and castic soda made them wash dirty linen in hot water. The ubiquitous dhobi ghats in the old Indian cities are still visible where you get to see the big cauldron being heated with water and old washable clothes being submerged in to it.

Story of Soap and detergent

Soap was invented nearly 300 BCE in Babylon. The name SOPA is derived from the Latin word “Sapindus” sap means soap and induces signify from India. This plant is found in tropical climates. The nuts of these plants were collected and dried in sunlight and stored for some time and later soaked into hot water before use. This made the water soapy which was used as soap. The common name for such a tree is soap based on reetha, Washnuts, etc. In ancient India, the people used reetha as soap and still ladies use Amla reetha and shikakai for hair growth. Reetha and Amla are packed with antioxidants and keep the scalp healthy. Shikakai whose botanical name is Acacia Concinna has a great amount of vitamin c and helps hair care, the use of Multani clay and its mudpack clean the dead cells of the skin and make it glossy. It soaks impurities.

Similarly in the olden times, people use reh soil to wash clothes. Reh is a saline efflorescence rising on the surface found in the Indo Gangetic plains. This makes soil worthless for cultivation. This is a mixture of sodium salts people used Ash to wash utensils and wash hands in the absence of soap. Hand cleaning ash was derived from the hearths and people rubbed it to inactivate bacteria and viruses.

System of schooling of King and Subjects in India

If we try to study the chronology of schools, it goes long back to the epic period, beforehand the schooling was done in a different way. In those days the prince and the affluent children were sent to ashrams of Rishis. These learned scholars used to reside in forests away from society and relied upon the gratuities of the rich people and the kings. Imagine lord Rama, Krishna, and Pandavas all went to such ashrams and the education was imparted to them on merits, This education included morality, theology, weaponry, politics, administration etc. The disciples were discerned on the basis of their inborn skills and thus they were prepared as a better soldier, commander, ruler, and many other visages. The education was all based on interaction and chantings without the written facility.

The education system strove with the arrival of paper. In the absence of paper, the writings were done on tree leaves, copper plates, tree backs, leather parchments, etc for writing purposes, the calligraphy was done with a pointed stick of reed on bamboos or the peacock plum. The vegetable colors and soot were used as ink. This system changed much in medieval times. In the Islamic era, the madrasas were built for the studies of the Quran and some other subjects. At the same time, the Gurukuls and Sanskrit schools were opened. During the Islamic rule and the tenure of Rajput rules, the royalties had great scholars and teachers to impart education to the royal kids. Bairam Khan was the notable tutor of Akabar. Similarly, Sati un Nisa Khanam was the tutor of Shahjahan’s daughter.

The history of toothbrush of King and Subjects

The history of chewing of teeth can be traced nearly 3000 years back we found mention of toothpicks and dental care first by the Greek doctor Hippocrates. Similarly, Chinese and Greek texts are replete with dental care.

In the early time, there was no toothbrush, so the royals and common men used chew sticks which were made by thin twigs with frayed ends. These twigs in India were called Datoon and were rubbed against teeth. The brush was first invented in china in 1948 and first, they used boar bristles in place of nylon. In India the twigs of neem and Miswak were used to make a toothbrush. Miswak or Salvadora persica tree twigs were used with salt.

Media in ancient India.

In the pre-historic age, the cave paintings were a sort of media and this accelerated with the invention of paper, Indian media has passed from mimetic stages to the electronic age now. In the olden era in India, newspapers, magazines and other media were not available. It was the Bengal gazette which was the first newspaper of India. In the early times of maharajas, the news was communicated through a public announcement and was called Munadi. The announcement was done by the proclaimers on the beats of drums. Besides this, the announcement was done during festive occasions or gatherings,

The earliest traces of media can be traced back to the Romans where they started the fastest courier services which spread the dispatches and the news everywhere with a wide network of roads and waterways. In India bards or the jagas were also used as harbingers who were roaming around and spreading the news. Like the Romans, King Ashoka used the media of inscriptions all around his empire.

Kitchenware of king & subjects

If you visit the private museums or the government museum of India have a chance to look at the grand Havelis of Mandawa or elsewhere, you encounter the kitchenware, crockeries, and utensils of the Maharajas and the rich men. In case you visit the museum of Scindia palace you get to see the dining sets valuable crockery and the silver toy train running on dining table. Thus the opulent people had the privileges of royal legacy.

The subjects of the kings on the other side had the traditional way of the kitchen. In early times under a thatch underneath a hearth made of much operated by wooden logs. The wood was procured from the plants and the evening heath was ready with cornflour. Imagine the better half blowing the air and trying to evade the flames of fire playing with the tongue. Sometimes the family had to be satisfied with the meagre onion and chapatti in lien of vegetables. The contented they went on sleep peacefully and dreaming of the next day. All they prepared served on a leaf or a bone plate made of clay or the Chinese proclaim.

In the Punjab religion of India the concept of tandoor became popular where the neighborhood had a common tandoor called sanjha choolah. This system in Sikhism was popularized by Guru Nanak Dev Ji to eliminate the caste system and this became very popular. This was easy and practical as well where one tandoor was hot and served to all the persons in the vicinity. Though the tandoors are native to Indus valley civilization but the modern tandoors that we see now is the contribution of the Mughals as they were very fond of Tandoori items.

Drinks of Kings & subjects

The maharajas and the royalties had discovering taste and various sorts of drinks were invented time to time during their region. These kings were great lovers of lemonades, best alcohol and wine. The great rulers had different drinks from south to north and east to west. So surprisingly the Mughals in 16th century used ice from Kashmir for the Kulfi Falooda and the other drinks. The palaces and drinks of the royal are good themes for the YOLO Tours in India.

The subjects of the royalties had the access to the countryside and local drinks like sharbat and Lassi only. In alcohol, they used hooch which is a sort of monshine.

Mehtab Bagh literally means moonlight garden. This famous garden built on four quartered garden system lies north of the Iconic Taj Mahal across the river Yamuna. During the Mughal era, Agra city had great fame of being the capital and garden city. Most of the Mughal rulers were fond of open-air places, fountains, and lush green fountains just to avoid the scorching heat.

Babur – Great Lover of Gardens

The first Mughal emperor Babur was a great lover of gardens. After laying the foundations of the Mughal dynasty, he enriched the city of Agra by making 16 gardens on the bank of the river Yamuna – like Aram Bagh, Bagh-E-Gul, Apshana, Mehtab Bagh, etc. Out of all these only 2 are remaining now- Aram Bagh is known as Ram Bagh and the Mehtab Bagh.

Mehtab Bagh – Babur’s Dream Project

The chronicles say that Babur started a dream project of this garden in 1529 and this was his last garden. He wanted to make it on the theme of the Paradise gardens with the rippling water Channels, water cascades, fountains, and trees laden with seasonal fruits and flowers.

History of the Mehtab Bagh

The legends say that Babur used to come and visit the Mehtab Bagh during leisure times in the night. Daytime he was preparing for the visit to Aram Bagh which is hardly 5 km away on the bank of the river Yamuna. This was continued during the time of Humayun who used to pay a visit to it as he used to come to pray in a nearby mosque at the Kacchpura village built by him.

Read the More related blog:- Agra Fort History, Timings FAQ’S

Contemporary historians of the time of Sha Jahan think that Shah Jahan also chose this garden site where the river makes a crescent shape. After the completion of the Taj Mahal, he used to visit this garden patch in the moonlight nights. From this garden, he used to capture the memories of his paramour Mumtaz Mahal in the form of the Taj Mahal.

Thus Mehtab Bagh was reformed and restored during the time of Shah Jahan by making the walkways, airy Pavilions, and fountains. These gardens were having an affinity to the gardens of the Taj Mahal.

Is the site of Mehtab Bagh the black Taj Mahal foundations?

Lots of questions are raised about the story of the Black Taj Mahal. The stories say that right across the river Yamuna at the site of Mehtab Bagh, Shah Jahan was dreaming of making the black Taj Mahal- a negative copy of the white Taj Mahal. These legends attributed to the travel memoirs of the French traveler Jean-Baptist Tavernier who come in the 17th century and records that Shah Jahan wanted to make a black Taj Mahal for himself similar to the white one.

Some people also agree on the basis of the research done by A.C.L Carlleyle in 1871, in which he opines the excavated pond to be part of the foundation of the black Taj Mahal. Besides these two vague ideas, there is no historic evidence as such to consider the area of the Mehtab Bagh as the site of the black Taj Mahal project.

When this garden was excavated?

After the decline period of the Mughal dynasty, there happened much local encroachment in the Mehtab Bagh and many great floods inundated the whole site. At one point there was no proof of the Mehtab Bagh and the garden area was having a huge mound of sand with unusual growth of wild flora, when the Archaeological Survey of India planned into the task of restoring these gardens in 1990 A.D.

How to Reach Mehtab Bagh?

Mehtab Bagh can easily be reached by car or by coach. It is located close to Kachhpura village and taking Yamuna kinara Road and crossing the Ambedkar bridge, you can reach the Mehtab Bagh. You can also come to this place via Etmad-Ud-Daula Road. It is nearly 3 km from the Agra fort and 5 km from the Taj Mahal. You can easily get there by hiring a tuk-tuk or electric rickshaw.

Mehtab Bagh Entry Timings & Charges

Mehtab Bagh remains open from sunrise to sunset. Good time to visit this garden during the summertime is 6 AM to 8 AM and 5 PM to 6 PM. During the winter perfect time to visit is 8 AM to 11 AM and 4 to 5 PM.

Sightseeing of Mehtab Bagh Agra?

Mehtab Bagh is a fine specimen of Mughal Gardening and horticulture where more than 80 varieties of plants and shrubs are planted. These floras include hibiscus, guava, neem, bahunia, Ashoka, etc. They are planted in a sequence where the tall trees follow the short and then shrubs are given place. Such arrangement of plants is eye-catching and above all the serene atmosphere and awesome view of the Taj Mahal mesmerize the tourists. Some of the plants produce multi-colored flowers and these shine in the sunlight and moonlight like the glittering stones of the Taj Mahal.

What Makes Mehtab Bagh Famous?

The most popular is the sunset view of the taj Mahal from Mehtab Bagh. The local Administration made a Taj Mahal viewing platform recently where one can gaze at the beauty of the Taj Mahal on the full moon in case one is not able to get permission to go inside the Taj Mahal on the full moon.

Mehtab Bagh plays a significant role for those tourists who come to Agra just for one day and unluckily it is Friday on that day. As you know Taj Mahal remains closed on Friday, thus Mehtab Bagh gives the option to view the Taj Mahal and its magnificent glory from the other side of the river. This is t the point where you can make Instagram worthy pictures or enjoy the sunrise or the sunset at the Taj Mahal.

I am prompted to write this blog during my recent travel to the tourist places of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan which abounds in the temple architecture such as Garhi Padaval, Mitawali, Bateshwar, Osian, and many more. Most of these magnificent dates back to the era of Gurjar Pratihar era which is supposed to have a long time span of 3 to 4 centuries. Kannauj was a very important city during this era.

To be true I had very little knowledge about these places and had only heard about them. The places I visited with friends enthralled me meowing to the great architecture and history behind them. I was mesmerized and left to think about the Gurjar Pratihar rulers who erected such gorgeous temples. On each of these sites, I encountered very few tourists, almost nil. I had to gather information from the same inscription and by the tales of the localities.

Who were Gurjar Pratihar?

One thing was crystal clear that almost all of these temples were built during the great era of Gurjar Pritihar rulers who ruled a vast area of the Indian subcontinent from 8 to 11th century A.D. Some of the great rulers ruled from Ujjain and made it their capital, while the others ruled from Kannauj.

The famous Gurjar Pratihar ruler Nagabhatta II defeated the Arabs. His grandson Mihir Bhoja chose to rule from Kannauj and during his regime, the prosperity of the empire reached its zenith.

What is the Old Name of Kannauj?

In the Ramayan and the Mahabharat Kannauj find a mention by the name of Mahodya. Later in during the era of Harsh it was changed as Kanyakubj the close allys of Karus, the Aryan race settled her during the era of Mahabharat thus ares had known as Panchal desh had its capital at Kampilya.

Kannauj History of Harshvardan Times

Situated on the banks of the river Ganges, Kannauj has been an important city since ancient times. It was exciting even before Gupta Dynasty. If we trace back the history it was a pant of the Panchal republic. After the Gupta régime noted ruler Harshvardan decided to dwell her and assist her sister. During his era, Kannauj saw a lot of architectural development and prosperity. Harsh Vardhan was well known for his wealth at the Kumbh of Allahabad every twelve years later.

Kannauj & Gurjar Pratihar

Kannauj saw the advent of the powerful Gurjar Pratihar ruler Mihir Bhoj who ruled for 49 years from 836-55 A.D. and compelled his enemies to surrender all the time. Turks never dared to attack his territories. While I was visiting the sites of Gurjar Pratihara I came to know that some Rajput clans originated from the time of Mihir Bhoj- like Parmaras, Solankis and Chauhans. During his time Kannauj had 7 fortresses and five thousand temples. Trade and commerce thrived much in his time and peasants were happy.

History of Kanakpal Parmar

Some of his prominent commanders expanded the borders of his empire from Kabul to Ranchi, Gujrat to Bengal, and from the Himalayas to Narmada. These commanders were also in the charge of providing security of friendly states against enemy attacks. One such important commander was Kanakpal Singh Parmar who helped Nepal against the foreign invasions. This chieftain made Garhwal as his capital.

How Kumhraur and neighboring villages came into existence?

Around 40 years back when I was getting with the elderly persons in my village and I was inquisitive to know about the history and founding of my village Kumhraur. I was also curious to know how the neighboring village is known as Gujarpur. I was told that one commander Kanakpal alongwith his fellows came from Ujjain during the reign of Mihir Bhoj. These people founded 7 Parmara villages namely kumhraur, lilapur, ujeerpur, etc and since that time Gujarpur came into existence.

How was Kannauj During Jaichand’s Era

Jaichand was having hold over Kosala and Kasi and made Kanyakubj(Kannauj) as his capital. He belonged to the royal Garhwal dynasty which flourished after the decline period of the mighty Gujrar Pratiharas.

Kannauj has the famous story of elopement of Sanyogita with Prathviraj Chauhan. The legend say that Jaichand was at daggers drawn with the Chauhan ruler Prithviraj. Thus during the invasion of Muhhand of Gor he did not help Prithvira rather he indirectly supported the invader. Thus Prithviraj had to lose . He also had to lose later in Chandawar battle . Later his son Harishchand ruled under Muhhamad of Gor up to 1225 A.D.

During the reign of Jaichand the the city buildings and massive fort was built. Besides Annapurna Devi temple and Gaurishankar temple are worth visit. It is considered that during Jaichand’s time the rose farming started and people started brewing of the essence of roses.

Less Importance to Kannauj in Mughal times

As is widely known that Kannauj used to be a Tahsil of Farukhabad district earlier during the decline period of Mughals . A new city was founded by Farukhsiyar after his name and many towns and villages were founded all around the newly built city.

Thus the focus of attention was shifted from the ancient Kanyakubj to Farukhabad . Kannauj was bleeding on it’s sad lot and the lofty historic structures and bare buildings were left deserted, telling the stories of the glorious past.

Where is the Red Fort Located?

The red fort in Delhi is located in the old city of Delhi, the fort is situated across the famous Chandni Chowk area of old Delhi , the famous Jama masjid is just a walk of few minutes from the red fort. The palaces of the red fort overlook the ring road of Delhi with the memorials of Indian political stalwarts across the road. This area is the most congested area of Delhi city.

How to reach the Red Fort?

Parking- Being a very congested part of the city it’s good to know that the Red Fort has ample parking space available for all tourist vehicles, from the parking lot you can walk all the way to the Lahori gate or you can ride the electric vehicles available over here for a short ride. Don’t forget to visit a small mosque known as “Sunhari mosque “near the parking lot and southwestern gate of the red fort.

History of Red Fort

Red fort- In year 1638 ACE king Shah Jahan decided to make a fort on the banks of river Yamuna. This fort was completed in year 1648 at a cost of ten million Mughal Rupees. Aurangzeb son of Shahjahan ruled over India from this fort. 18th Century saw many Mughal kings being crowned and many scandals being hatched over here, In 1739 Nadir shah the Persian emperor looted peacock throne and many more valuable memorabilia from here. In 1752 the Marathas won the red fort, In 1783 the Sikh forces of Baba Baghel Singh Dhaliwal conquered Delhi. British East India gained control of red fort in 1803. After the revolt of 1857 the English again recaptured the red fort and last Mughal Bahadur Shah Zafar II was exiled to Rangoon. In 1947 India became independent nation and the Prime minister unfurls the national flag from the bastion of red fort every year on 15th August. In 2007 This fort was accorded the status of World heritage monument.

Red Fort Entry Charges :- The entry tickets of the Red Fort Delhi can be purchased from the ticket counter at the Fort. They can also be bought online from the ASI website.

Entrance gate- There are three gates in the red fort. The common tourists can seek entry through the Lahori Gate. The Lahore Gate is the iconic symbol of free India. Every year the prime minister of India hoists the National flag over here on 15th August the Independence Day of India. The Delhi gate is used as an entry and exit gate for the VIP persons. The third gate is no more into use. It’s known as the Khijri gate (waterfront gate). Huge wooden gates gilded with bronze guard the Lahori gate. You can sight some bullet marks probably from the war of 1857 on the doors. Very near to the entrance gate, you can buy the entrance tickets to seek entry to the red fort.

Red Fort Timings:- Red Fort Delhi is open to the tourists from sunrise to the sunset. It remains closed on every Monday.

What are the places to visit in the Red Fort?

Meena Bazaar- As you walk across the main entrance gate you are greeted by a colonnade of shops, this was called as “Meena Bazaar” a market for the royal ladies. The royal ladies could go for shopping right inside here in the fort. Just a little distance is the open crossing known as “chatta chowk”, this is the cross way crossing the north-south street. This is also the center point of this market. The Chatta chowk is an octagon in shape its ceiling is missing and it has an open top. The end part of the Meena bazaar is in the shape of a gate with stairs on both sides. A short walk from the Meena bazaar leads you into an open area with Barracks from the British times. These Barracks were constructed during the British rule of India to accommodate the English forces living inside the fort.

Naubat Khana- The red fort is given the name because of the red-colored sandstone ferried from the quarries of Rajasthan (Dholpur). The same red sandstone has been used to make the Naubat Khana or Nakkar khana this literally means the “Drum house”. The royal bands with drums and music instruments used to welcome the arrival of the royalty entering through the gate. The top floor has been converted into a hall with closed windows, This hall was being used as a museum now the museum has been shifted. The entrance facade of the Naubat Khana is in white colour while the exit gate is in red sandstone with multiple alcoves on either side, the carvings are similar to the ones seen in the period buildings of Agra fort and Taj Mahal (Mosque, Mehman Khana and Royal Gate).

Deewan E Aam: – Right across the Naubat Khana is the court of public audience known as Deewan E Aam. Nine arches of the Deewan E Aam face the Naubat Khana. This is a single-storied building with four small arched dome structures on four sides. The arches are typical from Shah Jahan era and bear remarkable similarity to the arches of Dewaan E Aam of Agra Fort.

The common people of the Mughal Empire could approach the Mughal emperor seated on the lofted platform of white marble. This platform has been covered in glass enclosure. It has been regally done in marble inlay of semi-precious stones. The hall is elevated and there are stairs leading to the inner space. The symmetry of this building is astounding; you can feel the symmetry yourself as you get excellent Instagram pictures across the arches. There are two small windows on either side of the royal throne these were supposed to be used by the royal ladies without being noticed by outsiders.

Rang Mahal- Right behind the red sandstone building of Deewan e aam is the Rang Mahal. The conspicuous feature of the Rang Mahal is the “Nahar E Bahistha” Delhi has intense summers so to combat this heat the Mughals made water channels fountains and a shallow water pond right in front of Rang Mahal. Just imagine when these fountains worked and the water flowed through the water channel across the midst of the rang Mahal. What a view it was.

Rang Mahal and a water body in front.

How did the Royal People use to involve in Merrymaking?

The white marble palace was used for merrymaking. Right in front of the palace is a small very well decorated waterfall (abshaar) originating from a water channel flowing through the midst of the palace. One vault of Rang mahal is done in mirrors embedded on the walls known as Sheesh Mahal. The palace is on top of the basement, there is a gate to the basement visible on the left side of the facade. It is rumored that British weapons are still stored in the basement. Adjacent to the Rang Mahal on the left side is an open pavilion. Where the king came up for a public view every day in the morning. This pavilion overlooks the riverside. Book Taj Mahal Tours

Khaas Mahal- The special pavilion of the king opens into the open courtyard this is also made in white marble with multi cusped arches. This is supposed to be the private palace of the emperor. . The name “Khaas” has been used. It was divided into three respective sections, “Khwaabgaah” was the private place where the emperor slept, “Baithak” where the king had very private meetings and “Tasbeehkhana” a place where the emperor praised the lord and repeated the rosary. The building has rings to tie the tassels of the eloquent silk curtains and “shamiana”( royal canopies).

Where is Yamuna Gate Located?

Underneath the Khaas Mahal is the gate leading to the riverfront so it was called “Yamuna gate” it’s a folklore that the emperor Shah Jahan came into the palace through this gate in 1648 to join the inauguration ceremony, he was showered with gold coins by his crown son “Dara Shikoh” the entire palace was decorated and the celebrations continued for nine days. All the artisans were accordingly rewarded.

Dewan E Khaas– Next to the Khas Mahal is the Deewan e Khas. This is also a white marble building, this was the place where the closed meetings of the king with his ministers were held. The building had a sliver ceiling which was melted during the times Mughals had lost their power. Today the ceiling is a replica of the same in wood.

What is the famous verse of Firdaus?

On one fine marble screen is written a famous Persian verse “Gar Firdaus Rue Zameen Ast. Hamien Ast Hamien Ast” Meaning if there is heaven on this earth then it’s over here and over here. The marble was excavated from makrana in Rajasthan and extensive “Pietre dura” work can be seen on the walls and the columns. The world-famous “Takhte Taus” or the Peacock throne was once situated in Dewan E Khaas, It was later looted by the Persian emperor Nadir Shah in the late 18th century. One side of Deewan E Khaas leads into Musamman Burj. This was the place from where King George V and Queen Mary made a public appearance during the Delhi Darbar and coronation ceremony in 1903.

The building appears straight and very well-tuned to the geometry of other buildings but the inner confines are angled a little, this was to make sure that devotees bow towards the west (Mecca).

Q- Why there is so much open space in Red Fort Delhi while the royal palaces are not that large.
A- The Mughals came from central Asia and brought their legacy with them. They used to love their “Shamianas” or royal tents. It is known Shahjahan had a royal shamiana whom he was very fond of. This shamiana was epitome in luxury, braided with the most luxurious carpets, the gold thread woven tassels of silk curtains exuded nothing but luxury.

Q- Why did Shah Jahan make Red Fort in Delhi?
A- Shahjahan was the absolute ruler of India, his shifting of capital and making of Red Fort in Delhi sure was not because of any threat perception. Shahjahan loved his wife Mumtaj Mahal and after her death is known to have lost all interest in worldly pleasures. It is said he confined himself to a room for a month and when he made his first public appearance after the confinement. The people could not believe their eyes as the emperor had turned grey in just a month. Agra was the place where the mausoleum of Mumtaj Mahal was being constructed being in Agra constantly reminded him of his irreparable does so to solace himself he started making a new fort in Delhi.

Q- Was the Red Fort Delhi made by the Artisans who worked at the Taj Mahal?
A- Yes the chief architect was Ustad Ahmad Lahori and in fact, the red fort of Delhi strongly negates the so-called assertion about the amputation of the workers working in the Taj mahal. The same team of masons, stone carvers, cutters engineers worked in the construction of the red fort. The fort bears astonishing architectural similarity between the monuments constructed by Shahjahan at Agra Fort and the Taj Mahal in Agra.It is said that Shahjahan on the auspicious occasion of the inauguration of the red fort gifted these artisans with valuable gifts.

Q- Why the bank of Yamuna was selected for making of Red Fort in Delhi?
A- Mughal right from the times of Babur was very perturbed by the summer heat of the plains of India so to combat this heat they made beautiful gardens , The most important thing for these gardens is the availability of water so most of the Mughal forts and monuments are made on the banks of rivers to facilitate the availability of water.

How was the Mughal Harem In Agra Fort?

The Mughal harem was popularly known as Zenana and it was having two stories. The top one was used for the day to day routine while the lower one used to have cool grottoes. It used to comprise of deep passages, bowlies, wells, staircase. The ladies used to retire to this place to find relief from the scorching heat of May & June and involve in the fun games and prattling.

This place used to have a private kitchen and washrooms. The imperial kitchen was much more important and for security reasons, the food tasting was done. The food was served in special Chinese porcelain which had such nature as they used to split if there was poison. Even the chef had to taste the food before being served to the emperor. The ladies of the harem were involved in different crafts such as spinning, painting, zardozi work, etc.

The truth about Jahangiri Hauz in front of Jahangir Mahal

Right in front of the Akbari Mahal the visitors site a cup-shaped cistern carved from a single block of yellow sandstone with small steps outside, The height of this monolithic bowl is 5 feet from outside and 4 feet from inside. The walls are 6 inches thick. The cistern was excavated from the garden of the Jahangiri Mahal soon after the mutiny of 1857.

This bowl was placed in the cantonment garden and the common people of Agra used to refer it to be a cup of King Bheem (The legendary character of Mahabharata known for his extraordinary size and strength). Later it was placed in front of Deewan-e-aam and finally moved to its present place. Some Historians say Akbar ordered it to be built and was used as a bathtub of infant Jahangir but the feeble inscriptions on it mention the name of Jahangir and year 1611 A.D (1019 A.H). This is the same year when Jahangir got married to Noorjahan so probably this was made by King Jahangir and presented to Noorjahan as a gift.

Some historians aver that lady Noor Jahan discovered the essence of Rose (Atar) in this bowl and later she guided the harem ladies how to brew this essence. Nobody knows the truth behind these stories. Anyway, this is a great piece of architecture.

The Mystery behind the Canon Shots in Agra Fort

The marble screens near the Musamman Burj have marks of cannon shots. The Canon shot marks can also be seen on the left side of the façade of Dewan-e-Khas. Similarly, you can site some bullet marks on the wall as you enter the fort from the Amar Singh Gate. People are left wondering as to which war left these marks. A book written by an English women R.M Coopland wrote her memoirs in her book “Lady’s escape from Gwalior” she mentions these gunshots being there in 1857 and according to her these were made by the Guns of English officer Lord Lake in 1803 when he captured the fort from the Maratha forces of Scindia.

Sheesh Mahal; Agra Fort

This is widely known as the house of glass and is one of the most exquisite buildings of the Agra Fort. This was built between 1631-40 A.D and was serving as the imperial bath chamber. This fabulous palace has the profusion of glass work done on the walls. These mirrors were imported from Haleb in Syria. The entire ceiling is richly covered with millions of small mirrors. It is presently cordoned by the Archeological Survey of India for restorations since 2003.

Though in the English Period it suffered much decay still it retains much of it’s old grandeur. It served as a summer retreat for the royal use and the Syrian glass used to reflect sunlight. A couple of years back while it was open people used to thump the walls and it used to produce a mesmerizing effect of sound. Imagine the summer palace with much glare, music, gargling water cascades, water fountains, This palace is right underneath the Deewan E Khaas accordingly the walls are strong enough to bear the weight.

Agra Fort under the Marathas

In the 17th century A.D Agra Fort felt under the Maratha power. The Sciandia’s were the dominant rulers. They enjoyed the power and pelf of the Fort. When in 1761 the Maratha power waved by the defeat of the battle of Panipat under the hands of Ahmad Shah Durrani, this Fort fell under Ahmad Shah. Later in 1785 again Mahadaja Seriandia regained this Fort. Finally, when Maratha’s lost to the British in Anglo- Maratha war, this Fort comes under the British.

The Agra Fort falls under the British in 1803 while Lord Lake captured this Fort and had been under their occupation up to 1947 when India became independent.

Why John Russell Colvin’s Tomb was made Inside the Agra Fort?

Wonder That Was Agra Fort- History

Agra Fort is the power center that remained the main place of the Mughals until 1838 when the Mughal emperor changes his capital from Agra to Shahjahanabad, Delhi. It is perceived that the place where present Agra Fort is located used to have a mud fort built by a Rajput ruler Balsingh. Thus this previous Fort was known after the name of the builder as Badalgarh.

It was Emperor Akbar, the third generation of the Mughals who realized the strategic location of Agra and decided to raise a strong Fort out of red sandstone in 1573. He commended to employ more than 4000 mansions and a group of architects for this project. Thus he managed to build magnificent palaces such as Akabai Mahal, Bengali Mahal and much more. He fortified the palaces by making double walls and moats encircling the fort.

It was the regime of Shahjahan when Agra Fort was modified to a large extent according to the liking of Shah Jahan, as it is widely known that Shahjahan performed the use of white marble instead of red sandstone. Thus major palaces and mosques built during his time are made out of pure Makrana marble. These buildings include—Deewan-i-Khas, Khas Mahal, Angoori Bag, Sheesh Mahal, Muthamman Burj, Moti Mosque, Nageena Mosque and so on.

Besides the erection of the palaces, the three generations of Mughal rulers- Akabar, Jahangeer, and Shahjahan tried their best to provide them the best luster. They had the aesthetic taste and richly ornamented the palaces with paintings, inlaid work, tiles, and furnishings with rugs, tapestries.

Imagine the emperor Shahjahan sitting on the celebrated throne- the peacock throne studded with immense jewels and diamonds and dispensing Justice. The whole Deevan-I-Am carpeted with Persian rugs and the courtiers sitting with their respective positions- Similarly while Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan strolling through the Angoori Bagh, the rippling water in the canals and water cascades used to add the charm. The couple involved in the pastimes such as Pigeon flying, watching of elephants fights etc.

What is the significance of the Moti Masjid in Agra Fort?

There exists a beautiful mosque made out of white marble closer to Deevan-i-Am in the Agra Fort. This is named as the Moti Masjid or the Pearl Mosque. In the British times, the area closed to the Divan-i-Am was called the Armory square and it lead to the gate of Moti Masjid. Presently this mosque comes into the Army area and is not open to the tourists.

This mosque is supposed to be built out of the remaining building material of the Taj Mahal. Thus it also resembles the Taj and is also made of white marble. There is a flight of red sandstone steps and as you ascend you reach the large court which has a large tank in the center. This is surrounded bu the cells which were used by the people who used to come for the prayers. This mosque is built on a raised platform. It was used as a hospital in English time around 1857. The English took refuge in Agra fort during the mutiny of 1857 and there was an outbreak of Cholera inside the fort, this hospital built and run in the premises of Moti Masjid then helped immensely in checking the outbreak.
