Muj the mighty Mughals tried to capture Guwahati may times but of remained unsuccessful. They had a big setback at the battle of saraighat in 1671 when they were crushed under the leadership of Lachit Dorphukar.

Umananda Temple
This temple is located on the peacock island of the Brahmaputra River is dedicated to lord Shiva. This island can be approached by the small boats. The temple is located on the top of a hill known as Bhasmakala. This island was built by King Gadachar Singh on 1694. This famous temple is built by the local Assamese craftsmen. As the name signifies uma Ananda (the joy of Goddess Uma) this temple is set in the serene atmosphere.
